Riapress.com is a great resource for free online books!

I just discovered a brilliant webpage: http://www.riapress.com. They offer public domain books like other e-book sites, but they are formatted perfectly for printing. The formatting and fonts are much nicer than one usually finds - as well as being compact. You can get Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter on a 67-page pdf file.

Their thematic emphasis is on American literature and nautical and adventure-type stories, and for copyright reasons, they don't have any newer works, but there is a variety of different titles from Jane Austen to Fyodor Dostoevsky, Charles Dickens and Mark Twain. They have a blog and a suggestion box. Sign up for their mailing list to keep abreast of what they're doing.
