Church and State in Germany and the U.S.

On March 9, 2007, I will be speaking at the American Monthly Luncheon on the topic of separation of church and state in Germany and the U.S. I will be comparing the connections between the state and church organizations in both countries in general and with a focus on particular examples. State money for church/religious purposes (religion in education, military chaplaincy, "faith-based" programs, etc.), legal enforcement of religious doctrines (blasphemy laws, blue laws, etc.), and civil religion (religious symbolism in politics and "public" places) are examples of the kinds of issues I will speak on.

If you are interested in attending, please get in touch with me.

Scientology?

Perhaps the curious German obsession with Scientology can be worked into your talk. Nothing I've seen in the German press seems to be thoughtful about how the major brand-name religious are similar to some of the complaints about Scientology. Every "expert" seems to come from one of the existing churches. Naturally they want to badmouth the competition at a time when their own customer base is dwindling.

You are right and that is part of the issue...

Right. I am no fan of scientology, but German media and politics rely on church-established expertise in their judgement of any and all phenomena having to do with religion. Every political party and every political fraction in every political body has both Protestant and Catholic "Referent" for religion which are the go-to people for issues like this. That is why something like the Humanist Press Service is so valuable.
